Iqrā (Arabic: إقرا) means to read, or recite.
The first five verses of Sūrat al-Alaq (العلق "The Clot"), sometimes also known as Sūrat al-Iqrā (إقرا, "Read"), are believed by nearly all sources, to be the first verses of the Quran to be revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
(Wikipedia)
"It was the seventeenth night of the month of Ramadan in AD 610...
He awoke suddenly on that first night in the cave in abject terror, his whole body, his whole inner self, caught in a vice-like grip that seemed to hold him within a massive pressure field… As he lay there, shattered, he heard the commandment, Recite!. This he could not do… Indeed, as he protested, he was completely illiterate. The angel closed in upon him, possessing him again with such force that he felt he would burst. Recite! he again commanded.
There was no room for refusal. The first verse burst from the lips of Muhammad, like breath being exhaled.
Thus were the beginnings of the Quran."
